Oregano from Crete
Greek oregano from Crete (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum), hand-harvested in the mountains of the island, air-dried and not ground. Its aroma is strong and slightly peppery, so a small pinch is enough for tomato sauce, pizza or souvlaki.
Taste: Savoury and peppery, intensely aromatic.
Characteristics:
- 100 % Greek oregano from Crete
- Grown on small plots in the mountains of Crete, farmed close to nature and without synthetic fertiliser
- Hand-picked in the morning hours and gently air-dried
- Not ground and no additives
- 40 g in a resealable pouch
- Ideal for Greek village salad, tomatoes, pizza, souvlaki and marinades
Our oregano grows in the hinterland of the north coast near Heraklion, on barren limestone soils with wind from the sea and more than 300 days of sunshine a year. It is farmed close to nature on small plots and harvested by hand. We work directly with small family farms whose way of working we know.
Use: Particularly good in combination with olive oil, because the essential oils are distributed evenly in the fat. Rub between your fingers before cooking to release the oils.
Storage: Store dry, airtight and cool. Full aroma in the first months after opening.
Shipping within Germany: €4.49, free on orders of €50 or more.
Delivery time: 2 to 4 business days (Mon–Fri).
Shipped with DHL. You will receive delivery details and tracking information in your confirmation e-mail.

What's behind your spice/herb from Crete-Manufacture?
From local farmers
The family farms in the mountains around Heraklion tend their small plots without synthetic fertiliser, following principles that have stood for generations. The plants grow slowly under natural stress and form particularly high levels of carvacrol. We do not work with traders but directly with these farms, because we know their land and their way of working personally.
Harvesting and drying
Harvesting takes place in the early morning hours, when the essential oils are most concentrated and before the heat of the day lets the aroma evaporate. The plants are hand-picked and gently air-dried, without machines, without artificial heat. This way of working preserves the high carvacrol content, which is why we work in small batches.
In the kitchen
Oregano best develops its aroma in combination with olive oil. Half the usual amount is sufficient – this is not a disadvantage, but a sign of quality. We personally select each producer, not based on certificates, but on what ends up in the package. Those who want to buy Greek oregano will find a product here that delivers on its promises.
Good to know
Oregano from the uplands around Heraklion, farmed close to nature by family farms. Hand-picked at flowering, gently air-dried, no additives. Altitude, limestone soil and more than 300 days of sunshine give it a particularly strong, savoury aroma.
Classically with anything Mediterranean. Over tomatoes, feta, roasted vegetables, grilled meat, pizza or in marinades with olive oil and lemon. Best rubbed between your fingers shortly before serving to release the aroma.
Store in a dry, dark place and well sealed, ideally in a jar or tin. Protect from light and moisture. This keeps the full aroma for about one to two years.
